About
Breeding decisions
without DNA tests
PhenoFactor is for farmers and gardeners who want to breed their own crops but have no DNA data for their plants, which traditional breeding predictors need.
Just enter what you can see and measure, like plant height, days to flower or grain color. PhenoFactor works out how those traits are inherited and predicts how the offspring of any two plants will turn out, so you can pick parents and make informed breeding decisions.
How it works
Three steps from
seed to prediction
- 1
Add a plant
Pick a crop and give your plant a name. A photo is optional.
- 2
Record what you see
Enter the traits you have measured or observed, like height, days to flower or grain color.
- 3
Predict offspring
Choose two parent plants and see how their offspring are likely to turn out, so you can pick the best pair to cross.
Data
Real crop research
behind every prediction
Rice
413 plants
36 traits and about 44,000 DNA markers per plant, from the Rice Diversity research collection. This is how the app learns how traits are inherited, so you never need your own DNA data.

Maize
4,372 plants
6 traits, like yield and days to flower, with growing conditions recorded alongside.
